How can I make a one-pot meal when I have very little time?
Choose ingredients with compatible cooking times, use suitable already-cooked components when safely available, and favour cuts and formats that cook at similar rates. Pressure cooking can shorten the time for many grains and pulses, but it must be used according to the appliance instructions and the ingredients' safety requirements.
Why it happens
Cooking time is often determined by the slowest ingredient, not the number of ingredients. Whole pulses and dense vegetables may need far longer than quick-cooking grains or tender vegetables. Preparation and heating the vessel also take time.
How it works
A one-pot meal is efficient when the ingredients reach their desired texture at roughly the same time. Combining ingredients with very different cooking needs can save washing-up but increase the risk of overcooking one part and undercooking another.
